Refractive indices of binary mixtures of 1-iodobutane with aromatic hydrocarbons
Abstract
Abstract
The refractive index (nD) of pure 1-iodobutane, benzene, toluene, o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene, mesitylene and those of their binary mixtures with 1-iodobutane as a common component has been measured over the entire composition range expressed by mole fraction (x1) experimentally at temperature 303.15, 308.15, and 313.15 K. From the experimental data, deviation in refractive index (DnD) has been calculated and fitted to Redlich-Kister polynomial equation. The deviation parameters were plotted against mole fraction of the 1-iodobutane over whole composition range. The observed positive values of deviation parameters have been explained on the basis of the intermolecular interactions present in these mixtures. A comparative study of mixing rules namely Arago and Biot, Dale and Gladstone, Lorentz and Lorenz, Eykman, Weiner, Heller, Newton, Oster and Eyring-John has been carried out to test their validity for these binaries over entire mole fraction of 1-iodobutane at three temperatures. Comparison of various mixing rules has been expressed in terms of average deviation.
